Analysing effects of painting streets white in Los Angeles

The mitigation of the urban heat island effect is one of the most challenging design tasks for urban planners and architects. Besides different nature-based solutions (NBS) such as vegetation or water, changing the physical properties of the urban materials is one way to reduce heat stress.

Coating dark asphalt roads with a white color is one adaption strategy that is recently applied in serval countries around the world. In our new case study we explore what the effect would be on the urban microclimate for one of L.A.’s oldest neighborhoods, Angelino Heights.

The dataset prepared for download covers a simulation period of 6 days and is therefore an interesting example for analyzing long term effects such as heat storage in the ground using ENVI-met.
