Strategies to improve thermal comfort and air pollution in urban plazas

1st Place – Winner

Gursharan Randhawa, MSc Architecture and Environmental Design at the University of Westminster, developed a toolkit to improve the environmental quality of urban plazas in New Delhi, India and revitalize the urban spaces through the implementation of strategies such as green spaces, façade control, roof covers, and materiality.

Evaluating the cooling effects of greening on urban microclimates in high density areas

2nd Place

Ying Zheng, PhD Student at Queen’s University Belfast and Landscape Designer, explored the potential of urban greening strategies to improve the urban microclimate qualities in the high-density urban area of Shenzhen, China.

Redeveloping northern Naples suburbs with a climate adaptive design strategy

3rd Place

Maria Gallotto, Graduate in Architecture from University of Naples Federico II, addressed the issue of urban and environmental redevelopment of the northern suburbs of Naples, Italy, with the primary objective of defining a climate adaptive design strategy to be applied at the scale of the urban compartment, specifically the Chiaiano compartment.

Machine learning pollution hotspots in urban street canyon

3rd Place

Jeffrey Man-Hei Chang, PhD Candidate at The University of Hong Kong, investigated the variability in wind patterns, buildings and diurnal traffic emissions on the distribution of NOx pollutants in Mong Kok’s street canyons. It examines the possibility of data fusion of CFD model outputs with machine learning techniques.

UNI LAB AWARD 2022

The winners were selected by an independent jury of four outstanding international experts in the field of sustainable architecture out of 70 submissions. It is our pleasure to present here the four winner of the UNI LAB Award 2022, which demonstrated innovative solutions improving urban resilience in different countries. Due to the excellent quality of the first winning entries, we have decided to award four winners this year.

With our commitment to raising awareness about climate change impacts amongst students worldwide, we have seen that youth-led action on climate change can have a very successful track record.

Yet, many innovative ideas have not been seen and been listened to, so we launched the UNI LAB Award in spring 2022. This new competition highlights the efforts of extraordinary students measuring and demonstrating the impact of urban design strategies and nature-based solutions while addressing climate challenges.

About ENVI-met

Who we are and why we do what we do

With ENVI-met, we help create more liveable cities for people, in balance with the natural environment. While sustainability is often perceived as protecting the environment at the cost of meeting people’s needs, this does not have to be the case – and we can prove it with scientifically verifiable figures. Since its founding in 2014, ENVI-met GmbH has been committed to understanding the dynamics of local environments to enable sustainable urban design. We use ENVI-met simulations to research and quantify the effects of architecture and urban planning on the microclimate of outdoor spaces.
